hard to follow violence was taken away which created gaps in the narrative and reference to Japanese culture like bowing eating rice and drinking sake were removedSpace Battleship Yamato featured sophisticated scripts that were several steps beyond the simple stories of good versus evil that children could see on Astro Boy or Speed Racer p34 Another show that debuted on Japanese TV in 1982 was Macross p37 In 1985 American TV imported Macross In the United States the show was aired under the title Robotech By this time censors was not as strict as it was in the 1960 s and 1970 s p38 Throughout the 1980 s anime developed a cult like following Akira was released in 1990 The themes extended beyond Kima Astro Boy and even Space Battleshipp Yamato Akira was also a technological achievement The filmmakers were among the first anime producers to use computers to create some of the animation in the film a process that had been used in the same year in the United States by the makes it animep44 Large eyes are also prominent because of Japan s high value of cuteness Large eyes are often used to express innocence and younger characters will often have eyes larger than those of adults p47 Anime artists found that by using Western faces in their stories they could give them an international flavor and center the stories in any country they desired That helped the anime
